Directed by Shinsuke Sato, the first season of Alice in Borderland premiered in December 2020 where it garnered 18 million views in its first month. Two weeks after the eight episodes premiered, Netflix announced that the drama will have a second season. Sato will be returning to direct the second season.

Alice in Borderland follows a downtrodden young man named Arisu who spends most of his days playing video games. One day, he and his two friends witness a mysterious display of fireworks. All of a sudden, the three of them get transported to an alternate apocalyptic universe of Tokyo known as the Borderland. There, they discover that they now have to play against other players who have similarly been transported in order to stay alive.
