Earlier this week, United States Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made a surprise appearance in an unlikely place to voice her support for transgender rights: A marathon Twitch stream of Donkey Kong 64.
Professional video game streamer Harry Brewis, known online as HBomberguy, embarked on a 57-hour stream to complete the classic Nintendo 64 title by 101 percent and raise awareness and funding for the trans youth rights group Mermaids. Over 50 hours in the stream, the Congresswoman called in from New York's 14th congressional district to thank Brewis' for his efforts.
With the Congresswoman's support, the stream ultimately raised $340,000 for Mermaids, well above Brewis' initial goal of raising $3,000 with $200,000 donated within the first 40 hours of the stream.
Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez was among many all-star cameos during the lengthy Twitch stream, with Donkey 64 composer Grant Kirkhope, actor Mara Wilson, Doom creator John Romero and transgender rights activist Chelsea Manning all appearing while Brewis completed the game including its secret ending that had previously eluded him all his life with the game.
Mermaids is a British advocacy group supporting transgender rights for youth, lobbying for support services for trans and non-binary youth in the United Kingdom.
