In a Twitter exchange with Star Trek: Voyager's Kate Mulgrew on Wednesday, New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said she learned lessons in leadership watching the actor portray Captain Janeway.
After a widely viewed stream of Among Us, Ocasio-Cortez solicited recommendations from Twitter for topics to discuss during her next stream. "This one is deep. Would definitely have to rewatch it but this is solid," Ocasio-Cortez wrote in response to Trekonomics author Manu Saadia's suggestion she discuss "Justice for Tuvix," a reference to the popular Star Trek: Voyager episode in which the characters Tuvok and Neelix fall victim to a transporter accident and are combined into a singular being, Tuvix.
In the fallout of the transporter accident, Captain Janeway faces the difficult moral dilemma of choosing between allowing Tuvix to live on or sacrificing him to give Tuvok and Neelix another chance at life. Janeway ultimately chooses to sacrifice Tuvix.
Ocasio-Cortez's tweets prompted Mulgrew to chime into Ocasio-Cortez' thread to defend her character's decision. "I stand by my decision to restore them to their lives," Mulgrew wrote.
Responding to Mulgrew's tweet, Ocasio-Cortez said she learned that leadership means "being responsible for working through dilemmas with no clear answer" and that Captain Janeway "leads with focus on her mission."
