Aladdin: Will Smith's Genie Tells Us a Story in New TV Spot

Will Smith as Genie in Aladdin

Will Smith's Genie promises to tell you the story of Disney's animated classic Aladdin in a new TV spot for the live-action film.

As the promo opens, Genie informs viewers he will tell them the story of Aladdin (Mena Massoud), Jasmine (Naomi Scott) and the lamp, while the song "Arabian Nights" plays over clips from the movie.

As the promo continues, Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) informs Aladdin that he has "stumbled upon an opportunity." The spot ends with Aladdin asking Jasmine if she trusts him. Just as she takes his hand, the movie's title logo appears.

From the way Genie acts as a narrator, it would seem that the film will follow the original animated version's planned twist, which revealed that the merchant at the beginning of the film was Genie all along. It also shows that, while some changes are inevitable, the film may be faithful to its original animated incarnation.

Directed by Sherlock Holmes’ Guy Ritchie, Aladdin stars Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Will Smith as Genie, Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, Navid Negahban as the Sultan of Agrabah, Billy Magnussen as new character Prince Anders, and Frank Welker and Alan Tudyk as the voices of Abu and Iago, respectively. The film opens in theaters on May 24.
