The Last Airbender may have received almost universally bad reviews and suffered through a fan backlash due to the whitewashed nature of its casting, but that didn’t stop it from making $3 million in midnight screenings last night. Has The Twilight Saga: Eclipse found its counterprogramming?
According to Deadline Hollywood, Paramount is calling Airbender the most successful non-sequel midnight opening this summer which strikes me as a very narrow definition of a win – How many non-sequel midnight openings have there been this summer, after all? – but that may just be them enjoying a flush of positive publicity while they can; with poor word of mouth and even worse reviews, it won’t be long until the movie’s light fades at the box office. Eclipse, on the other hand, broke another records yesterday, taking in the most amount of money on a Wednesday ever in US box office history, as well as the highest-grossing single day summer box office ever, with $68.5 million. For those keeping track at home, that means that the movie has already earned back its production costs in one day of release.
