Ahsoka Tano's upcoming series Ahsoka is drawing plenty of interest, particularly from fans of Star Wars Rebels since all indications are that the new show will follow that hugely popular animated series. Natasha Liu Bordizzo was cast as Sabine Wren in November, and the character of Ezra Bridger is also rumored to appear, making it fairly easy to draw a line between one series and the other.
When Star Wars Rebels ended, it was shown that Ahsoka and Sabine planned to travel into deep space in order to search for Ezra, who had been stranded in the Unknown Regions of space with only Grand Admiral Thrawn as company. The casting news has fans assuming that this journey will be what Ahsoka is about, and there's evidence to support that in her recent live-action appearances.
Fans learned that Ahsoka was hunting for Grand Admiral Thrawn when she and Din Djarin first met in The Mandalorian Season 2, Episode 5, "Chapter 13: The Jedi." Ahsoka dueled a powerful magistrate and demanded to know where Thrawn was. She had a strong connection with Ezra in Star Wars Rebels, and since Ezra was lost along with Thrawn, it's entirely probable that she would be tracking Thrawn in an effort to locate her friend.
Sabine had multiple run-ins with Thrawn during Rebels, and she was likewise was dedicated to finding Ezra. Her presence as a main character in Ahsoka supports the idea that their journey together is the point of the new series. Their venturing off into the Unknown Regions would also give the show an opportunity to introduce new Star Wars locations and potentially even provide a glimpse of the First Order.
There is, however, room for Ahsoka to be a standalone series. Thrawn was the antagonist in Star Wars Rebels and is rumored to be in the new series, but new canon books by Timothy Zahn have been painting the character as less of a villain. He could end up being more of an anti-hero than a full-on antagonist, especially since his people live in the Unknown Regions. Ahsoka and her allies could broker a peace with them in order to serve a larger goal, setting up an entirely different story.
Ahsoka is rumored to begin shooting in March 2022 with no confirmed premiere date to put all the speculation to rest. However, new details about the project continue to emerge on a regular basis, so by the time it actually begins streaming fans should be well aware of whether or not it is a true Star Wars Rebels sequel. The character's appearances since then have certainly laid the groundwork for that if that's the way Disney wants to continue her story.
