American Horror Story's 10th season premiere "Cape Fear" shares the same title as the classic 1962 neo-noir psychological thriller of the same name and its 1991 remake from Martin Scorsese.

The title was confirmed by actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Black Widow, The Tomorrow War) through a graphic posted on her Instagram. It depicts the episode title along with the season's name, Double Feature, with a shadowy man walking around a town at night.

The 1962 production of Cape Fear was directed by J. Lee Thompson and was based on the novel The Executioners by John D. MacDonald. It was remade in 1991 by Martin Scorsese, which saw the return of the 1962 film's stars Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum and artin Balsam. The film tells the story of a recently released convicted rapist who seeks revenge against the attorney that sent him to prison by stalking and attacking his family. The original and its remake saw some differences, but both were critically acclaimed and successful upon release, though critics were more hesitant regarding the original's dark themes and heavy subject matter.

Whether or not the episode takes direct inspiration from the film and its remake has not been confirmed by those involved, but the film's legacy is notable. It served as the inspiration for Quinn Martin's Tales of the Unexpected episode "The Force of Evil" as well as The Simpsons episode "Cape Feare." The film's villain Max Cady was selected by Newsweek as one of the 10 best villains in cinema history.

American Horror Story frequently engages in references to other popular productions of horror, as both showrunners Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk are big fans of the genre. The show's ninth season, 1984, paid direct homage to 1980s slasher films like Friday the 13th and Halloween. The sixth season, Roanoke, mimicked both found footage films and paranormal documentaries. Season 5 saw the appearance of several prominent real-life serial killers (Coven's Axeman was also based upon a real person), and the season's setting is loosely based upon the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles.

American Horror Story: Double Feature stars Kathy Bates, Leslie Grossman, Billie Lourd, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Adina Porter, Lily Rabe, Angelica Ross, Finn Wittrock, Frances Conroy and Macaulay Culkin. Season 10 will premiere Wednesday, Aug. 25 on FX.
