Those who have kept up-to-date with one of Netflix's newer ventures, Aggretsukowill know that its titular character is a driven office worker who starts her job with grandiose ambitions of what her future will be like that steadily start to be crushed over the first season.

Despite this, though, she keeps her hopes for the future high, and does all that she can to live her life to the fullest however she can. She begins to open up to others more and stop being ashamed at her karaoke hobby, and we'll bet there are some things that even hardcore fans might have missed about her. Today, we'll be asking (and answering) ten questions about the lovable red panda that is Retsuko.

10 What Does Her Name Mean?

Most characters' names are designed to have some sort of special meaning in mind, something that represents who they are or something about their personality, and Retsuko is no different.

Retsuko literally translates into 'fierce child', which certainly fits her and the fiercer side of her personality that we see develop throughout the series. 'Retsu' translates into something else as well, meaning 'fury' or 'rage', which fits perfectly as when she starts screaming death metal, that state is often referred to as her 'rage mode'.

9 How Much Is Known About Her Family?

In Season One, we hardly know anything about Retsuko's family, until her mother gets revealed to us in the second season. However, if you've only watched the Netflix adaptation and don't have any knowledge of the original Japanese shorts the show is based off of, you'd be surprised to know that we've also seen a bit of Retsuko's grandmother, as well.

While she hasn't been named, she's been shown to have the exact same personality as Retsuko- sweet on the outside but hiding a lot of rage deep down.

8 Does She Care About Social Media?

Being a twenty-five-year-old office worker, Retsuko is around the age that people usually are who are... to put it lightly, a bit obsessed with social media- and a good example of this is her coworkers, Fenneko and Tsunoda. Fenneko spends all of her free time stalking others on social media, while Tsunoda takes extra time to make sure she can take Insta-worthy shots that will get her a ton of popularity.

Retsuko doesn't usually seem interested, but she actually does go a bit Insta-crazy in the Christmas short, We Wish You A Metal Christmas, where Tsunoda coaches her on getting more likes and she spends the holiday season obsessed with doing so. However, by the end, she goes back to not really caring much about social media.

7 Is She Really Unhappy With Her Job?

Throughout Aggretsuko, quite a few conflicts come up surrounding Retsuko's work- be it being demeaned by her boss or receiving incredibly unreasonable requests from him, to having to consistently work overtime to complete what's asked of her to feeling like a constant target in the workplace. With all this, it's easy to think Retsuko hates or would take the first opportunity to quit her job- but when Tadano gives her this exact opportunity in Season Two, she doesn't take it.

After doing a lot of thinking, Retsuko decides that even with all of its pitfalls, she still likes doing her job and wouldn't give it up- even if she could afford to.

6 Does She Really Value Marriage?

In Season One, Retsuko seems all too eager to be whisked away from her job into marriage- and the role of a stay-at-home wife- though at the time, it was pretty unclear whether this was something she really desired or if she just loved the idea of getting out of a job that didn't turn out to be quite what she expected. However, later on when she and Tadano partner up and he says that marriage and family are just constructs that he isn't interested in, we get a real answer.

Retsuko does value these things, very highly, and is even willing to end the best relationship she'd had because their values just didn't align, and honestly, good for her.

5 Is She Oblivious To Haida's Feelings For Her?

One of the first things we learn about Haida is the fact that he has unrequited feelings for Retsuko, and she seems to be rather oblivious to these feelings still, even after the end of the second season. However, this isn't really something that Retsuko can be faulted for, as Haida has never tried to honestly communicate these feelings to her- at all. If anything, he's done nice little gestures that any good friend might, and even insists that it's because they're 'such good friends' instead of being honest.

There was a scene where she rejected him at the beginning of We Wish You A Metal Christmas, but that was also made out to look like a dream sequence, so it's unclear if that actually took place or not. It was never hinted at or brought up again in the second season.

4 Who Voices Her Death-Metal Belts?

Most of the time, the ever-lovable Retsuko is voiced by Erica Mendez- also known for roles such as Sailor Uranus and Ryuko Matoi- and she does a phenomenal job at capturing every facet of her personality. Well, almost. We can't expect a voice actor to undergo training to learn death metal screaming, so that's where another actor comes in!

In English, Jamison Boaz does her metal parts, while in Japanese it's actually the writer of the series himself that takes up the part, which we found incredibly interesting.

3 Is She Based On Real Japanese Office Workers?

Retsuko is indeed based off of real-life office workers, mainly female office workers, especially in Japan due to their work culture. And no, we don't mean that actual office workers are going to bathroom stalls to belt out death metal lyrics in order to de-stress on their break. There is huge pressure on Japanese girls to 'act appropriately' without complaining or venting, so it becomes commonplace for real workers to have 'two' personalities, the way Retsuko behaves.

On the outside, they may act cute and proper the way they're 'expected' to, but hide a lot of rage deep inside that they can't properly express due to societal norms. That's part of the reason the show itself was created- for people struggling with those feelings to have a more light-hearted show to relate to.

2 How Does She De-Stress Besides Karaoke?

Retsuko from Aggretsuko

Anyone who's seen more than a few minutes of Aggretsuko will know that belting out death metal is Retsuko's preferred method of relaxation. However, what about the moments where she's perhaps unable to do so? Does she have any other leisure activities that help her calm down and take her mind off work? There is one thing that she can be seen doing relatively frequently throughout the series, and that's drinking.

She also seems to use it to unhealthily escape things like anxiety, as shown when she meets Resasuke and ends up drinking way too much and getting sick. At least he's there to care for her after, turning it into a relatively sweet moment.

1 How Does She Fit In The Sanrio Universe?

Sanrio is known for making adorably cute characters that typically fit into the standard definition of 'kawaii', however Retsuko doesn't fit this mold- and she isn't meant to, either. An office worker who was asked about Sanrio's top seller, Hello Kitty, along with Aggretsuko had something quite interesting to say. She stated that "while Hello Kitty lives in Dreamland, Retsuko is grounded in reality" and that she and fellow co-workers could personally relate to many of Retsuko's struggles.

Basically, Sanrio wanted to give people a character who they felt related to and represented them, especially with how die-hard and cutthroat Japan's work culture truly is. That was more important to them than making a cute character simply to be cute.
