While a majority of Marvel fans know and love the MCU films, there is a very loyal fanbase for some of the MCU’s television shows, the largest of which is most definitely Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC. Starring Clark Gregg as fan favorite Agent Phil Coulson, the show followed a small band of ordinary heroes as they used their skills as spies, soldiers, and scientists to battle threats from the shadows.

With the show ending next year, it’s time to take a look at some of the S.H.I.E.L.D. storylines fans can expect not to see come to the small screen.

10 Operation Brain Blast!

This first one is interesting in that not only was it created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby themselves, but was known as one of the first ever dedicated S.H.I.E.L.D. storylines in Marvel Comics. The story focused on the government agencies secret ESP division, which was combating threats of mind control and mind reading from organizations like HYDRA.

The comic also became known for introducing the villain Mentallo, an ex-member of the ESP Unit who joined HYDRA after being fired. It is unlikely the final season will take time to focus on this story.

9 Operation: Cold War

A complex, unique and interesting tale that would have been interesting to see play out on the show would have been Operation Cold War. The story focused on a terrorist organization taking over and destroying a S.H.I.E.L.D. training facility that housed over 1,000 trainees.

While the story involved the now gone Baron Von Strucker (gone int he MCU during Age of Ultron), changing it up or incorporating the story at all would have been great, but it is far from likely as it’s plot is complex and also involves aliens, doomsday cults and even more.

8 Nick Fury’s Howling Commandos

While the show has explored many aspects of the Marvel universe and the spy organization as a whole, one thing that never got introduced was the organizations monster team known as the Howling Commandos. Originally working under Nick Fury, the group was a collection of heroic monsters who fought monstrous threats around the world.

While Fury wouldn’t have been able to make himself known on the show, it would have been interesting to see Coulson interacting with a group of monsters like Frankenstein-clones and hybrid vampire/werewolf women, but the concept doesn’t seem likely for the show’s final season.

7 Kitty Pryde, Agent Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

While Marvel now own the rights to the X-Men, it is highly unlikely the show runners of the acclaimed show will have time to incorporate this next story into their final season as the show is about to end in one year. That story is Kitty Pryde, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The story revolves around bringing the mutant hero and future team leader into the organization to battle a computer virus infecting the Helicarrier and instead finding an old foe attacking the group. There simply isn’t enough time to introduce mutants and the character overall.

6 S.W.O.R.D. Vs. S.H.I.E.L.D.

One of the things about S.H.I.E.L.D. from Marvel Comics that fans love is the other organizations that either spin off from the group or are inspired by the group. This was never more evident than when Marvel introduced S.W.O.R.D., an organization dedicated to protecting Earth from alien threats.

Much like Supergirl is doing on The CW, S.H.I.E.L.D. could have introduced some themes of xenophobia and fighting discrimination with aliens by introducing the rival group, but the group has only been hinted at in Spider-Man’s film.

5 Axiom Protocols

One fantastic story in recent years has to be Axiom Protocols, which involved a major change in the relationship between Phil Coulson and the rest of the team in the comic books. During this event, fans saw a plot involving Coulson’s former flame Lola Daniels, who had used her telepathic powers to read Coulson’s mind and attain the knowledge he’d acquired to allow him to take out any superhero on Earth should they step out of line.

The plot involved Grant Ward donning an old Iron Man suit, stealing the plans, and revealing his partnership with the Marvel villain Gorgon.

4 Civil War II

One of the teams best stories in recent years actually was a tie-in with an ongoing story involving the superhero community, and that was Civil War II. The story focused on a battle between Iron Man and Captain Marvel, after the latter used the powers of an Inhuman who could see the future to predict an attack on Thanos, but War Machine lost his life in the process.

The morality of profiling and arresting people before crimes are committed came into play, and forced Coulson to defy his organization’s orders to follow Captain Marvel’s commands, making him the enemy.

3 Who Is Scorpio?

The next story is really interesting as it is one of Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s greatest storylines, and that is Who Is Scorpio?. The title saw the emergence of a super spy, terrorist and criminal mastermind known as Scorpio. Over the years many took that mantle for themselves, but the original was an evil version of Nick Fury’s brother Jake.

Now the show won’t have time to introduce Jake or bring Nick Fury into the fold once more, but it would have been cool to see the villain emerge and cause the team problems.

2 Secret Empire

Definitely one of the most controversial storylines in recent years, Phil Coulson and S.H.I.E.L.D. had a major tie-in into the Marvel Event Secret Empire. The story that saw Captain America’s history rewritten to make him a HYDRA agent who took over the organization and the world had fans divided, but provided a heartbreaking scene for Phil Coulson.

It involved Coulson discovering Captain America’s true nature, and then being hunted down and taken out by the Cap loyalist Deadpool, who didn’t see Cap as the villain. This storyline will never appear in the final season.

1 Squadron Supreme Of America

The most recent comic book storyline and the least likely to appear has to be Phil Coulson’s introduction of the Squadron Supreme of America. After the events of Secret Empire and the new status quo in the Marvel Universe, fans saw a new Avengers team consisting of Cap, Iron Man, Thor, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, She-Hulk, and Ghost Rider emerge, and this led to tensions with the US as Black Panther led the team.

In response to this, a surprisingly alive Phil Coulson emerged from the shadows, now hating the heroes he worshipped and bringing the Squadron Supreme back.
