Meet the new boss: Alphonso "Mack" Mackenzie. When Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns for its sixth season next summer, Mack will be the one sitting in the director's chair, but don't expect him to follow in Phil Coulson's footsteps.

"It's going to be different than Coulson," Simmons told CBR at Comic-Con International in San Diego. "Coulson's a different man and Mack is a different person, so he's going to lead a different way and I think there's going to be growing pains."

In Season 5, Coulson realized he was dying. So, in preparation for his passing, he named Daisy "Quake" Johnson as his replacement. Daisy, however, had other plans. She quickly realized she wasn’t the right person for the job, but she knew exactly who was and made it her first act as S.H.I.E.L.D. director to name her replacement. With Coulson's blessing and approval from the rest of the team, Mack assumed the position and was a key part of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s successful effort to avert the end of the world.

“We keep moving Mack further towards the foreground, because he just has this strength to him and Henry [Simmons] gives you good humor and he gives you good heart. So that was part of it,” executive producer Jed Whedon explained to CBR in an earlier interview.

Returning in summer 2019 on ABC, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. stars Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Henry Simmons, Ian De Caestecker, Natalia Cordova-Buckley and Elizabeth Henstridge.
