Agents of SHIELD Reveal How Much They Know of MCU's Post-Avengers 4 Future

Avengers 4 promises to change the landscape of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that won't impact Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. just yet. Although Season 6 is due out in summer 2019, just after the release of Avengers 4, the cast hasn't been filled in on any of the major MCU shakeups. At Comic-Con International in San Diego, Henry Simmons, Natalia Cordova-Buckley, Elizabeth Henstridge and the rest of the cast revealed their insider knowledge -- or, rather, their lack thereof -- of the MCU's post-Avengers 4 future.

"First of all, not only do we not know about Avengers, we don't know what the hell's going on on our show!" shared Simmons, who plays Director Alphonso "Mack" Mackenzie on the series. "They tell us probably like -- I swear -- two days before we start shooting. Matter of fact, the episode that we just started in Season 6, we got the script eight hours before we started the table read."

"But then the script changed completely and we got it at 4 am, before I had to shoot my first scene, which was at 7 am," Yo-Yo actor Cordova-Buckley added.

"It's exciting, basically! So we're like the audience," Henstridge, who plays Jemma Simmons, pitched in. "We don't know what's going to happen, which is actually really fun, because then you go and you're with your character, finding stuff out as they find stuff out. Frankly, it's less work. You don't have to learn all those scripts in one go!"

"That's why, when you ask about the approach, at least for me, I don't have an acting approach on the show, which has been amazing, because it's been an adventure to just jump in without any knowledge of anything," Cordova-Buckley said.

While Season 6 won't arrive on ABC for almost a year, principal photography on the series began this week, with star Clark Gregg stepping in to the role of director for the premiere. Plot details on the upcoming season are being kept under wraps but casting calls for new characters indicate the team may take on a group of mercenaries over the course of the season. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will return for a shortened season, though the network has indicated they don’t plan to end the show after Season 6.

Returning in summer 2019 on ABC, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. stars Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Henry Simmons, Ian De Caestecker, Natalia Cordova-Buckley and Elizabeth Henstridge.
