Agents of SHIELD: Deke's Shocking Connection to the Team Revealed

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for "The Real Deal," the 100th episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Deke is more connected to the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. than he ever could have known. As revealed in "The Real Deal," the 100th episode, he is in fact the grandchild of Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons.

During the FitzSimmons wedding, Deke had a little chat with Deathlok about how he went and picked up stuff for the ceremony on the team's behalf. "So you got the rings, huh?" Deathlok asked Deke, to which the other man replied, "I had to find one that was going to be small enough for his little boy fingers, and then -- for hers -- I found this ring that looks just like this one my mom used to wear sometimes. It was my grandma's, I think."

"So what about you? Bride or groom?" Deathlok inquired. Deke paused at that. "To be honest, I don't really know either one of them," he admitted.

Elsewhere, General Hale picked up a sample of Deke's DNA from when he was arrested in "All the Comforts of Home," last week's episode. Seeing as there was no record of him in any database, an assistant ran a test on it to learn more about him. "Thinking Deke Shaw could be an LMD, I ran a genetic profile to see if he was biologically linked to anyone," her assistant explained. She revealed that his DNA hadn't come up with just one match, but two: Fitz and Simmons. This confirms the earlier scene's implication that Deke is Fitz and Simmons' grandchild.

It is unclear if Fitz, Simmons or Deke will learn the truth of Deke's parentage this season. After all, that is quite a bombshell to drop on Fitz and Simmons -- and it may be one that alters the course of their future if they ever learn about it. However, Simmons seems more than open to having children with Fitz; in her wedding vows, she explicitly said, "I can’t wait for our next adventure: building a family together."

Per Deke's story, it seems as though Fitz and Simmons will have a daughter who inherits her mother's wedding ring, which Deke ironically picked out. He also told a story about his mother earlier on in this episode, which further implies that FitzSimmons will have a daughter, since her mention bears weight and thematically ties into the idea of Deke's connection to the two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.

In earlier episodes, Deke made it clear that his parents were the staunchest of True Believers, so much so that it led to their deaths. His character looks to be in his late 20s or early 30s, which indicated that he is only two generations removed from those who lived on Earth before it was destroyed; this implied his parents were the children of a generation that grew up on Earth when it was whole. “I was nine… when my mother got dragged away and murdered,” he revealed in "A Life Earned." “Kasius got rid of all the elders, all the smart people, and she was one of them. And after she was gone, my dad took up the cause." As such, "The Real Deal" confirmed this speculation as true.
