Despite speculation that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. could be introducing a version of the extraterrestrial X-Men foes The Brood, it seems Coulson and his crew will be facing off against a different alien race from the original Marvel comics.
As revealed in a 17-minute clip from the Season 5 premiere (released earlier today), the Marvel Comics-based series will bring in the aliens known as the Vrellnexians.
Identified halfway through the sneak peek by a character named Virgil, the Vrellnexians, which resemble roaches, first appeared in Marvel's Thor #212 from 1973. Hive-minded and controlled by queens, Vrellnexians are known to traverse space and conquer other alien races. Their most recent appearance was in 2000's Maximum Security: A Very Dangerous Planet one-shot written by Kurt Busiek and drawn by Jerry Ordway.
