Have you ever thought about "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s" Phil Coulson getting romantic with Melinda May? It seems that Coulson himself has had this particular pairing on his mind -- or at least his actor, Clark Gregg, has been thinking about it.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gregg shared his interpretation of the relationship. “There seems like there might be some long gestating sparks happening a little closer to home,” he said. “I’m just going on what I’ve been reading... Something is different between them."

Coulson and May have already been close as colleagues and friends, but there are those who want to see them as something more. A search on fanfiction website "An Archive of Our Own" comes up with 1622 works of fan fiction featuring May and Coulson as an item. Perhaps Clark Gregg has been enjoying similar stories. It's easy to dismiss his speculation as just that, but it sounds like that idea has been effecting his performance.

"I don’t know, something’s going on," he continued. "They’re just a little different with each other and I can’t quite figure out what it is. They’re either becoming even better friends after all they’ve been through or, I don’t know, I keep feeling like some of these lines are a little flirtatious.”

So far in the show's fourth season, May has had a brush with death and resurrection -- just like Coulson did. If anything, that could serve to bring the two closer together. With her husband dead and the S.H.I.E.L.D. family under pressure, May has few friends left to turn to and very few people who understand what she's going through.

So what say you? Are you, like Clark Gregg, a fan of Philinda? Or do you prefer them working together as work friends?
