The grim reaper has set his sights on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and no one appears to be safe. Marvel has just released a trailer for the Season 5 finale of the ABC series, and it heavily teases the death of a major character.
The trailer starts with the menacing close-up of a heart-rate monitor, which is then followed by a look at Phil Coulson lying on a hospital bed. With the tagline "Not everyone makes it out alive," this promo doesn't shy away from letting us know that this next episode will be the end of the line for a certain character. But who?
While all signs point to the casualty being Coulson, who has been living on borrowed time for the entirety of this past season, the trailer could be playing tricks on us. Coulson's death seems all but inevitable, especially since he originally died in 2012's The Avengers movie, but Marvel might simply be preying on our expectations to deliver a truly shocking blow.
The Season 5 finale, which is ominously titled "The End," might serve as the series finale if Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is not renewed for a sixth encore. The fate of the series remains uncertain for now, although we should hear confirmation sooner rather than later.
Airing Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 stars Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Henry Simmons, Ian De Caestecker, Natalia Cordova-Buckley and Elizabeth Henstridge.
