The agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. witnessed the end of the world in Season 5, but now they might be preparing for another kind of ending -- their own. The minds behind ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have begun prepping the season’s finale, which they’re treating as a potential series finale.

The news comes a month after it was revealed that ABC was unsure about the series’ future. In January, Channing Dungey, the head of ABC Entertainment Group, said that the future of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would be decided in short order. Since then, there has been no official renewal or cancellation notice for the show.

“Yeah, we’re ready for if this is the end,” Jed Whedon, co-showrunner on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., said in an interview with TVLine. “We’re definitely going to make it rewarding either way.” Co-showrunner Maurisa Tancharoen confirmed that the finale could serve as “either” a suitable capper or a season or the entire series.

Returning on March 2 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 stars Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Henry Simmons, Ian De Caestecker, Natalia Cordova-Buckley, Elizabeth Henstridge, Nick Blood, Jeff Ward, Eve Harlow, Pruitt Taylor Vince and Coy Stewart.
