SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for "Rewind," the latest episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

In "Rewind," the latest episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Enoch had a chance to explain himself. The character -- who made his debut in the Season 5 premiere, where he stripped off his human skin suit and revealed the alien underneath -- filled Fitz in on the reason his friends were sent to the future. While he was doing so, he also revealed a few interesting facts about himself and his purpose.

According to Enoch, he is something of an alien anthropologist. "I was sent here 30,000 years ago to observe and record the evolution of your species, what you would call an anthropologist," he explained to Fitz and Lance Hunter. "My Earth name is Enoch. I am a sentient chronicom from a planet which revolves around star in the constellation you know as Cygnus."

Though Enoch's role demands that he doesn't interfere in human affairs, there is one way around this rule. “Our protocol allows for one exception: the prevention of an extinction-level event,” he said. This is what enabled him to send Direction Phil Coulson and the rest of the team through the monolith to the year 2091.

As the episode progressed, Enoch revealed his connection to Robin Hinton, a clairvoyant Inhuman who prophesied that the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents would arrive in 2091 to save humanity. He subsequently helped bring that prophesy to fruition in order to prevent the extinction-level event she had predicted. However, since Fitz was not part of her original vision, Enoch did not send him through.

Fortunately for Fitz, Robin made another prediction that he would go to the future to save his friends. As soon as Robin revealed this, Enoch was on board to help Fitz get to 2091. "It’s prophecy now," he told Fitz as he revealed the existence of his cryofreeze chamber, which Fitz ultimately used to get to the future. Enoch even went so far as to summon a chonricom vessel, where he hid Fitz away and monitored his stasis until the year 2091 arrived.
