Agents of SHIELD Reveals New Director’s Superhero Identity

Viewers met the new director in last week’s episode of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” but they didn’t know his true identity — until now.

Entertainment Weekly confirms that actor Jason O’Mara (“Terra Nova,” “Life on Mars”) is actually playing Jeffrey Mace, who’s better known to Marvel Comics fans as the Patriot. Some eagle-eyed viewers, including CBR’s own Meagan Damore, had already pieced together the clues, which included a description from Marvel Television that the character’s roots extend back to the 1940s.

So who is the Patriot?

Debuting in 1941 in “The Human Torch” #4, Jeffrey Solomon Mace was a Daily Bugle reports who was inspired by the exploits of Captain America to become a superhero. Despite lacking superpowers, Mace donned a costume and dubbed himself the Patriot, an identity he used to fight crime, often with his sidekick Miss Patriot. He helped to found the Liberty Legion, referred to as “America’s home front heroes,” and even adopted the identity of Captain America following the disappearance of Steve Rogers and the death of William Naslund (formerly the Spirit of ’76).

Of course, the version of Patriot introduced on “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” differs significantly from his comic book counterpart, as there he’s an Inhuman with superhuman strength and invulnerability.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
