The Koenigs are headed back to "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." According to Entertainment Weekly, Patton Oswalt will reprise his role as brothers Sam and Billy Koenig in "Hot Potato Soup," which airs on January 31.
“Patton Oswalt returns as the Koenigs, and we finally reveal their family secret,” executive producers Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen teased.
Oswalt has appeared in seven episodes as identical triplets Billy, Sam and Eric Koenig, but he hasn't returned since the Season 2 episode "Scars," which aired back in May 2015. Each of the three brothers were stationed at different S.H.I.E.L.D. bases, and Sam even oversaw the Theta Protocol, which saved the Avengers in Sokovia during the events of "Avengers: Age of Ultron." However, Eric tragically died at the hands of Grant Ward when it was revealed that Ward had been a Hydra agent all along.
The Koenigs' return couldn't be more timely. Due to the fact that the identical triplets were all S.H.I.E.L.D. agents charged with guarding secret bases, many fans speculated that they were actually LMDs -- which is, coincidentally, the title of the story arc that "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." just launched. However, since the Koenigs appeared long before Holden Radcliffe created LMD technology, it isn't very likely that their family secret is that they're actually Life Model Decoys. Clones, on the other hand, are still on the table, at least for now.
The report also included a new photo of Oswalt from his "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." return. It's unclear which Koenig is pictured here, but one thing's for certain: it's a different setting for the loyal S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. He appears to be giving some kind of performance at a club. As per the photo, he's also swapped his sharp suit and beloved lanyard for jeans and a graphic T-shirt, so it seems at least one of the Koenigs has taken up a different line of work.
Airing Tuesdays at 10 pm ET/PT on ABC, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Chloe Bennet as Daisy “Quake” Johnson, Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May, Iain De Caestecker as Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Jemma Simmons, Henry Simmons as Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie and more.
