The Kree are coming to Earth, and there's nothing Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. can do to prevent it.
Since the closing moments of last season's finale, fans have been looking forward to seeing how Agent Coulson will deal with his new, off-planet predicament. Fan theories stung up across social media as soon as the episode finished airing, with some expecting him to return to Earth almost immediately, while others are hoping for the Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of S.W.O.R.D., aka the Sentient World Observation and Response Department -- essentially S.H.I.E.L.D.'s interplanetary counterpart. Now, thanks to AoS star Ming-Na Wen, we know there's definitely a blue-hued intergalactic threat facing the team when the show returns to ABC for its fifth season.
Wen made the revelation during a round table interview at New York Comic Con, telling CBR and other members of the press, "We have the Kree to deal with [in Season 5]. We can actually mention that and how strong they are and how blue they are. That's one element. And then we also have aliens."
Who -- or what -- the other aliens are remains to be seen, though it's worth noting that the Kree have traditionally been at war with the shape-shifting Skrulls, another classic Marvel race of aliens that has yet to make its presence felt in the MCU.
Of course, the Kree have been at the heart of a number of major AoS plot lines over the past four seasons. It was due to ancient Kree experiments that the inhumans came to exist, for one thing, and Agent Coulson owes his life to GH.325, a drug derived from the blood of a Kree corpse the U.S. government discovered in a Hydra facility near the end of World War II. Whether either of these play into the Kree's Season 5 motivations remains to be seen, though it's a good bet one or both will come into play at some point.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will return to ABC for its fifth season this winter following the conclusion of Inhumans. The series stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Chloe Bennet as Daisy “Quake” Johnson, Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May, Iain De Caestecker as Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Jemma Simmons, and Henry Simmons as Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie.
