Marvel Cinematic Universe favorite Hayley Atwell firmly denied that she'll be popping up as Peggy Carter in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s final season.

With Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 7 taking a trip to the past, there have already been several ties to the short-lived Agent Carter and a continuing storyline that ties into the Captain America spinoff series. However, while Peggy Carter has been given a nod, Atwell is adamant she won't be reprising her role to meet Coulson and his team.

When one fan wrote, "I hope to see you soon in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.!" on Instagram, Atwell simply replied, "No," with a peace sign. Even though Enver Gjokaj recently reappeared as Daniel Sousa to bring the two shows closer together, it looks like Agent Carter's leading lady won't be joining her co-star.

Atwell joined the MCU back in Captain America: The First Avenger. She returned in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Ant-Man, and, despite the complicated nature of the franchise, once again portrayed Carter in Avengers: Endgame to give Captain America his happy ending. Aside from Marvel movies, Atwell led two seasons of Agent Carter before it was axed by ABC.

There's been plenty of talk about how Agent Carter could get a new lease of life on Disney+, but for the time being, viewers will have to settle with the odd character cameo in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The teaser for June 17's "Out of the Past" hinted at a grim fate for Sousa, with the S.H.I.E.L.D. team discussing whether they should intervene. While it looks like Atwell is out, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Chloe Bennet said "definitely" when asked if there were a few more surprise cameos from the MCU on the horizon. So far, alongside Gjokaj, Patrick Warburton is back as Rick Stoner, and showrunner Jed Whedon has made the most of Season 7's time-hopping storyline with Patton Oswalt playing the 1931 version of Ernest Hazard Koenig.

While Atwell won't be back for the final season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., she plans on reprising her role for Disney+'s animated series What If...? as Captain Britain.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s final season airs Wednesdays at 10 pm ET/PT on ABC. The series stars Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Henry Simmons, Iain De Caestecker, Natalia Cordova-Buckley, Elizabeth Henstridge and Clark Gregg.
