SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for "Rewind," the latest episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has finally revealed why Director Phil Coulson and his team were sent into the future: because a little girl said they would be. In "Rewind," Fitz and Lance Hunter met Robin Hinton, a clairvoyant Inhuman who prophesied that the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents would arrive in 2091 to save humanity -- a vision brought to life by an alien anthropologist named Enoch.
In the episode, Fitz and Hunter tracked Enoch down to his residence. When they confronted him in his home, he revealed he had sent the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents through the monolith "to fulfill a prophecy." He then gestured to the walls, which were lined with papers filled with glyphs. "This speaks of the future. They were needed there," he explained.
Fitz then demanded to know why he wasn't sent with him, to which Enoch replied, "You weren't part of the seer's prophecy, Mr. Fitz." He also offered some insight into how the monolith, saying, "The stone can only be activated from the other end. I only knew when it would open. I have no knowledge of who opened it."
Eventually, Enoch agreed to take Fitz and Hunter to the person who had revealed all of this to him: a little girl named Robin, the daughter of Season 3 character Charles Hinton. Like her father, she had undergone Terregenesis and developed the ability to see the past, present and future. According to Robin's mother, “Her mind has been scattered. Past, present, future? It’s all the same to her, all mixed up. Sometimes she doesn’t even know I’m her mother.” This has also given the girl the ability to write in "an ancient language from another galaxy, never known to anyone on Earth, until her."
Per Enoch, Robin had foreseen the S.H.I.E.L.D. team going to the future, which made it prophecy. He enabled this prophecy by bringing the team to the monolith that sent them to the year 2091. He followed this prophecy to the letter, meaning Fitz was left behind because Robin did not include him in her prophecy. Though Robin has foreseen that this will "save humanity," she has not made it clear what S.H.I.E.L.D. is saving humanity from -- though Kasius' plan to wipe them out may have a little something to do with it.
