While Phil Coulson may have faced in end in the Season 5 finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., actor Clark Gregg will be returning to the ABC Marvel Cinematic Universe series in a mysterious capacity for its sixth season this year.In a video interview posted on Marvel Entertainment's official Twitter account, the actor confirmed he would be appear in Season 6 of the MCU series as a mysterious character that was not the longtime S.H.I.E.L.D. operative while admitting it was "strange" to return to the series after five seasons in a completely different role.RELATED: Agents of SHIELD's First Season 6 Trailer Is a Massive Spoiler

"To kind of change all that and suddenly find myself playing this other very mysterious person, who is not Phil Coulson, and the mystery of who that person is and why he looks like that is something that [the writers have] done groundbreaking, wild stuff with that I’m really lucky to play." explained Gregg.

Gregg had been portraying Coulson since the start of the MCU with 2008's Iron Man, reprising the role on the big screen in Iron Man 2 and Thor before meeting his seeming demise confronting Loki in The Avengers. Revealed to have been secretly resurrected with alien technology on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the character had his life-saving procedure eventually reversed resulting in his presumed, off-screen death after the Season 5 finale.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is set to return for its sixth season in July 2019 on ABC with 13 new episodes; the series stars Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Henry Simmons, Iain De Caestecker, Natalia Cordova-Buckley and Elizabeth Henstridge.
