Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has had its fair share of twists and turns over the years. From Ward being an agent of Hydra to the team getting sent to an apocalyptic future in space, the show has always kept its audience on its toes. Even so, this never stopped fans from trying to figure out what would happen next.

While some may get frustrated when the story doesn't go the way they expect, this prevents the narrative from becoming too predictable. Fortunately, after seven years, S.H.I.E.L.D. still managed to surprise fans multiple times in its final season. Here are five things that nobody saw coming in Season 7.

Agent Daniel Sousa Joining the Team

Although fans were excited to learn that Enver Gjokaj would guest star as Agent Daniel Sousa in Season 7, they didn't expect him to stick around for almost the entire season. After Agent Carter was canceled, most people assumed that Peggy and Sousa lived happily ever after, but Avengers: Endgame threw a wrench in this when Steve Rogers traveled back in time and settled down with Peggy. After that fans were left wondering what happened to poor Agent Sousa.

Not only did S.H.I.E.L.D. continue his story, but they also gave Sousa a brand new life complete with a new leg and a new love interest. After they saved him from being killed by Hydra, Sousa joined the team on their mission to stop the Chronicoms. Along the way, he fell in love with Daisy Johnson, and once they completed the mission, they got to explore the stars together. It may not have been the ending fans expected for the character, but Sousa was a great addition to the final season.

Daisy's Secret Sister

It was already surprising that Season 7 saw the team go back to Afterlife, but the real shock came when the team discovered that Jiaying had had another daughter before Daisy. While she had never mentioned Kora before, Jiaying had been alive since at least the 1920s and Daisy knew little of her life before meeting Calvin Johnson. After learning about what became of Kora, it appears that Jiaying never brought her up because the memory of losing her daughter was too painful. It probably made it that much worse when she and Cal discovered that Daisy had been taken from them. Thankfully, Daisy didn't have to lose another family member, and after bringing her to their side, she recruited Kora to S.H.I.E.L.D.

The Return of John Garrett and Victoria Hand

John Garrett and Victoria Hand in Agents of SHIELD Season 7

Seeing as the character was killed off in Season 1 and Bill Paxton passed away in 2017, few people expected to see John Garrett return. Nevertheless, many were pleasantly surprised to see James Paxton step into his father's role. It was fun to see a young Garrett team up with the bad guys, but it was even more shocking when he was killed off again, this time by a young Victoria Hand. This reverses their roles from Season 1 when Agent Hand was killed by Garrett's Hydra recruit, Grant Ward. Although Garrett did appear to be switching sides, it's quite poetic that Hand got to shoot the man who would've been responsible for her death.

The Agents in the Hazmat Suits

Hazmat Suit Agents in Agents of SHIELD

At the end of Season 6, fans were confused when Simmons showed up at the temple with a bunch of agents in hazmat suits and saved the team. Even stranger, the mystery agents didn't come with them when the team jumped to 1930s New York. At the time, it didn't seem that important, but little did viewers know that this detail would come back into play.

As it turns out, the hazmat suit-clad agents were the team themselves. More specifically, Sousa extracted a piece of the monolith Fitz and Simmons helped saved May and Yo-Yo handed her past self a breathing apparatus. Additionally, Fitz was right beside past Simmons when she said she couldn't know where he was, making the moment bittersweet. Another show might not have explained the background agents, but S.H.I.E.L.D. neatly tied up the loose end.

(Almost) Everyone Lived

As they've demonstrated in past seasons, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is not afraid to kill off characters. Consequently, many fans firmly believed that there would be some major deaths in the final season, and it seemed like their suspicions were confirmed when Enoch told Daisy and Coulson on his deathbed that this would be the team's last mission together.

The sentient Chronicom was right, of course, but the team was not separated by death as expected. Although they did lose Enoch and Daisy had a close call, everyone else on the team was alive and well in the end. They simply went their separate ways with Deke staying behind in the alternate timeline and the rest of the team either retiring or working in different branches of the re-established S.H.I.E.L.D. Instead of killing characters off, they gave everyone a bittersweet, satisfying send-off.
