CBR has an exclusive preview of writer Greg Lockard's new ComiXology passion project, Trick Pony.
Trick Pony is a new original graphic novel being published by ComiXology Originals from writer Lockard, artist Anna David, letterer Lucas Gattoni and editor Will Dennis. The preview introduces readers to a washed-up rodeo star named Jimmy Thomas and his horse Emmylou as they perform in front of a crowd of onlookers who have come to watch him ride.
ComiXology said of Trick Pony, "Together Lockard and David tell the emotional story of Jimmy Thomas, a gay rodeo star well past his prime. Jimmy is about to hit rock bottom when he receives an emergency call from his family alerting him that his father is in the hospital. Jimmy decides to head home with his trusty best friend, his horse Emmylou. While on the road he must confront the mistakes of his past, the monsters of his present, and come to terms with his life and future."
"Trick Pony is a project that has been germinating in my head and heart for over a decade," Lockard said of the new graphic novel. "It's a love letter to all my favorite Western stories but through a distinctly modern lens. Jimmy's adventure is about self-fulfillment on the path to making your dreams come true... and accepting that some shadows are going to follow you for life." He added, "Trick Pony is a story I think all readers can relate to. At the core, it's about the choices we make, who we become, and where we end up."
Greg Lockard's First Graphic Novel Makes the American Library Association's 2022 List
Prior to Trick Pony, Lockard's first graphic novel, Liebestrasse (which features art by Tim Fish, colors by Héctor Barros and lettering by Lucas Gattoni), was a 2020 GLAAD Media Award nominee for Outstanding Comic. Receiving a print edition from Dark Horse Comics in 2022, Liebestrasse recently made the American Library Association's (ALA) list of 2022 Best Graphic Novels for Adults. The ALA's description of Liebestrasse reads, "A beautifully written and illustrated story that gives voice to the lived counterculture experience during Germany’s interwar period. The care taken by the author and the illustrator to create a historically accurate portrayal of the dangers experienced by members of the counterculture, especially members who identified as LGBTQ+, during the rise of the Nazi's is heartbreaking."
