All Elite Wrestling (AEW) founder, president, CEO, general manager and head of creative Tony Khan is the new owner of Ring of Honor (ROH).

During tonight's episode of AEW: Dynamite on TBS, Khan announced that he has inked a deal to acquire ROH. "I've been a fan of Ring of Honor for a long time -- a huge fan," he said. "So, you can imagine I'm very excited, because today I signed a deal. I just became the new owner of Ring of Honor!" Khan's announcement was met with a standing ovation from the fans in attendance.

Following the televised announcement, Khan posted a statement to his official Twitter account, further explaining that he has entered a deal to acquire ROH's video library, brand assets and intellectual property from the Sinclair Broadcast Group. The acquisition "will be completed through an entity that is wholly-owned by Tony Khan."

"Ring of Honor's influence on modern professional wrestling is etched permanently in the history books, and this acquisition ensures that its legacy will be kept alive and treated with the utmost respect," said Khan. "This deal adds thousands of hours of content to our rapidly growing library and creates new opportunities to expand our footprint on a national and global scale, while having the potential to produce new content under the ROH banner. I will immediately begin exploring opportunities to make ROH's video library available to fans, who'll have the opportunity to witness the beginnings of the careers of some of AEW's biggest stars."

"Ring of Honor has produced some of the best professional wrestlers over the past 20 years, but more importantly, it created a family," added ROH COO Joe Koff. "I will be forever grateful to everyone in the ROH family who has worked tirelessly for the past two decades to take ROH to levels previously unimagined. Tony has the utmost appreciation and respect for Ring of Honor, and I'm truly excited to see how he continues the legacy."

ROH was originally founded by Rob Feinstein in 2002, with Cary Silkin serving as the promotion's owner from 2004 to 2011. Long considered the premier promotion in the American independent wrestling scene, ROH has been home to more than its fair share of industry superstars over the years, including current AEW talents like CM Punk and Bryan Danielson. That being said, ROH would not remain independent, as the promotion was acquired by the aforementioned Sinclair Broadcast Group in 2011.

In 2020, ROH took a five-month hiatus amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, with the promotion later returning to hold events in empty arenas. The Best in the World pay-per-view in July 2021 became the first ROH show to feature a live crowd in 18 months. However, in October 2021, ROH announced that it would be going on hiatus for at least the first quarter of 2022 following December's Final Battle PPV, with all ROH wrestlers reportedly being released from their contracts.

"Throughout the pandemic, our top priority was to keep everyone healthy and safe, and despite not producing any live events over 18 months, we were able to keep everyone fully contracted," ROH said at the time. "We now find ourselves at a time where we need to make changes to our business operations and are planning a pivot for Ring of Honor, with a new mission and strategy." Since the hiatus began, a number of former ROH talents made the jump to AEW, such as Brody King and Danhausen.
