All Elite Wrestling's newest faction, Death Triangle, scored an impressive victory in their first match on the March 11 edition of Dynamite. As more and more three-piece teams start to pop up in AEW, there should be a title to legitimize the division and give teams something to strive for on a big-picture basis.

The WWE has never seriously considered a Trios or 6-man championship, but other promotions like Lucha Underground, Lucha Libre AAA, and New Japan Pro Wrestling have given the division some shine -- and been rewarded for it. AEW's structure and commitment to showcasing trios (and tag team wrestling as a whole) means it's time to give the fans and talent a 6-man tag championship.

AEW Has a Talented Trios Division

Who would make up AEW's Trios division? Obviously, we'd start with the aforementioned Death Triangle, consisting of Pac, Pentagon Jr. and Rey Fenix, in which the latter is a one-time Lucha Underground Trios champion. The other obvious Trio would be Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks, Matt & Nick Jackson. The triad won 6-man gold in New Japan together twice, and The Bucks won a third time with current NWA and ROH star Marty Scurll.

But who else could AEW consider as a Trio team? Look no further than the official roster page, which actually lists win-loss records of wrestlers in Trios matches. Here's a short list of potential Trio teams we could see compete for 6-man gold:

  • Death Triangle (Pac, Pentagon Jr., Rey Fenix)
  • Jurassic Express (Jungle Boy, Luchasaurus, Marko Stunt)
  • SCU (Christopher Daniels, Frankie Kazarian, Scorpio Sky)
  • The Inner Circle (Any combination of Chris Jericho, Santana & Ortiz, Jake Hager, and Sammy Guevara)
  • The Elite (The Young Bucks, Cody, Kenny Omega, Adam Page)
  • MJF with The Butcher and The Blade (potentially including Wardlow)
  • The Dark Order (Evil Uno, Stu Grayson, Alex Reynolds, John Silver, and/or "The Exalted One"
  • Best Friends (Trent, Chuck Taylor, Orange Cassidy)
  • Joey Janela & Private Party

This is just a small sampling of potential teams that we've already seen compete in AEW, but there could certainly be more if there was a concrete division to compete in. Wrestlers like Dustin Rhodes and the newly-acquired Colt Cabana have relationships with a number of the above teams and could easily act as the third member should it make sense within a storyline.

A Trios division could also give the opportunity for lesser-utilized or newer, younger talent to join forces and make a name for themselves, similar to how New Japan's NEVER 6-Man Tag division functions as a stepping stone for younger or under-utilized talent to show their talents to the fans -- and company executives. A Trios division would also give long-standing feuds, like the ongoing turf war between The Inner Circle and The Elite, more room to grow while not sacrificing precious TV time that can go to other members of the roster.

The History of Trios

Trios wrestling is a long-standing lucha libre tradition, seen in Mexican promotions like Lucha Libre AAA and Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL.) CMLL has recognized Trios as an official championship division since 1991 and AAA has done the same since 1996, with an official title for the division returning in 2011. Lucha Underground introduced a Trios division during its first season and continued to prominently feature the division until the very end.

A 6-man division was introduced in NJPW during an event in 2016, possibly inspired by the company's partnership with CMLL. The 6-man divisions in these other companies have so many ties to current AEW talent, it's almost a no-brainer to begin a Trios or 6-man division in AEW sooner rather than later.

For AEW to show that it's a viable alternative and not a copycat to WWE, it will mean taking risks on new ideas and opportunities that the long-standing brand won't attempt. Legitimizing and showcasing a division like Trios, so steeped in wrestling lore for generations of wrestlers and fans, would be a fantastic way to differentiate the product from WWE and no doubt provide breathtaking matches sure to draw fans in. We'd love to see Death Triangle, with its two lucha veterans, or an up-and-coming team like Jurassic Express, be the inaugural Trios champions, no doubt kicking off an exciting new chapter in AEW history.
