When AEW started its women's division, the company had a pair of babyfaces it tried to push in Riho and Britt Baker. However, while Riho was an immediate hit, fans didn't seem to buy into Baker as a top babyface for the company.

The good news is that AEW listened to its fans and started to turn Baker into a heel for the company. While it was a rough start to her run as a heel, things have since picked up and she has become the highlight of the AEW women's division.

Britt Baker, D.M.D., was the first major babyface that AEW tried to push in its women's division. It seemed that she checked all the boxes needed to be its top female face. She had the look and wasn't bad in the ring. Plus, she was the girlfriend of NXT Champion Adam Cole, a top talent himself, so many believed she had what it took to lead the women's division. At Double or Nothing in 2019, she won a match that included main event stars in Awesome Kong, Kylie Rae and Nyla Rose.

However, after a few wins, it seemed fans were not ready to get behind Baker, and the cheers lessened. Even when facing heels like Nyla Rose, Baker didn't get the same audience response as other women wrestlers like Riho or Hikaru Shida. So, AEW decided it was time for a change.

Baker turned heel during an interview with Tony Schiavone, and at first, things were not going smoothly. Pairing her with Schiavone gave her a chance to develop her heel mannerisms with a very experienced member of the AEW roster. She came out and immediately started talking down to the highly respected Schiavone about the fact that he worked at a Starbucks for a short time after leaving WCW.

However, it was rough listening to her talk. While her boyfriend is one of the top promo guys in NXT, Baker struggled to get the fans to react with her initial heel promos. There were a lot of strange gaps in between her insults where the fans didn't really respond at all. However, one night in Texas, things started to click.

Baker began coming out every week on Dynamite to cut her promos against Schiavone, and each week she seemed to gain confidence. Then, she finally cut the promo that connected the most with the audience. She was in Austin, Texas, and after insulting Schiavone again, she turned her attention to the audience. She called them "chubby Whataburger faces." With Whataburger revered as a national treasure in Texas, that hit the sweet spot. Suddenly, Baker was feeling her inner heel and never looked back.

Since that promo in Austin, Baker has kept improving her heel persona, moving away from continually insulting Schiavone and directing her attention more to the other women's wrestlers. It looked like she was on a crash course for a rematch with Riho, who beat her in January on an episode of Dynamite.

However, Nyla Rose won the title, and Baker started to focus on other women, most recently Hikaru Shida again. Baker has been entertaining in the episodes of Dynamite with no fans. This included standing in a crowd of wrestlers at ringside, mocking anyone and everyone who got close to her. When she started trying to defend herself with her shoe when the in-ring action got a little too close, the moment was pure gold.

On a recent episode of AEW Dynamite, Baker and Shida battled in one of Baker's best matches to date. She ended up getting busted open with a bloody nose and lost a long, hard-hitting match, proving that her in-ring skills have been improving alongside her microphone skills.

AEW wouldn't give up on Baker when her babyface character wasn't working, and because of that, she was able to create a heel that got over with the fans. Now, after less than a year, she sits atop the women's division as its biggest highlight, the best female character on the entire roster.
