A&E Renews 'Bates Motel' For Two More Seasons, Cancels 'The Returned'

A&E has renewed its "Psycho" prequel "Bates Motel" for two more seasons. However, the supernatural drama "The Returned" wasn't as lucky; its first season will be its last.

The 20-episode order will take "Bates Motel" through its fifth season, but it's unclear whether that will bring the thriller to a close. However, Executive Producer Carlton Cuse had indicated he knows where the story is going, and envisioned the series running no more than five seasons.

Season 3 premiered in March with a 0.9 rating among adults 18-49 and 21 million total viewers overall, a 30-percent drop from the previous year.

Also produced by Cuse, "The Returned" was an adaptation of the acclaimed French series "Les Revenants," about a small town turned upside down when several local people, long presumed dead, suddenly reappear. Airing following "Bates Motel," the drama had difficulty finding an audience, attracting just 1.5 million total viewers.

Starring Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore, "Bates Motel" will begin production later this year for a 2016 return.(via The Hollywood Reporter)
