One of the most beloved Cartoon Network original series is Samurai Jack, created by award-winning animator Genndy Tartakovsky. Originally running from 2001 to 2004, a fifth and final season aired through Cartoon Network's more mature-oriented programming block Adult Swim in 2017.

Adult Swim has officially made all five seasons of the acclaimed animated series available to stream for free online, as households around the world are quarantined due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Also available through the Adult Swim site are two behind-the-scenes featurettes regarding the series' creation, including an interview with Tartakovsky.

The hit animated series followed a samurai warrior in feudal Japan who confronted a powerful demon named Aku that was terrorizing the country. Before the samurai could deal the killing blow, Aku sent the warrior into the distant future. Awakening in the brave, new world, the samurai learned Aku had conquered and shaped the world in his image following the samurai's banishment. Taking on the nickname Jack, the samurai battles evil in the future while searching for a way to return to the past and undo this nightmarish timeline.

Winning eight Emmy Awards, Samurai Jack blended Tartakovsky's interests in samurai culture and cyberpunk science fiction, while reflecting the animator's numerous influences across its five-season run. The series came to a premature end due to changes at the network while Tartakovsky developed the traditionally animated Star Wars: Clone Wars series with Lucasfilm, prior to the release of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. After numerous attempts to conclude the animated series' overarching story with an animated film, the final season premiered in March 2017.
