Official Press Release
Drawn & Quarterly and Rocketship present:
a book launch and signing with Adrian Tomine
SATURDAY, MARCH 31st @ 8:00 PM
Rocketship, 208 Smith Street, Brooklyn, NY
“What makes Tomine’s work so highly readable…is the psychological acuity in his figure’s postures and expressions, and his ear for our most confused, painful conversations.”–New York Newsday
“But it is Optic Nerve’s tales of loneliness, alienation, and attempted connections among teens and 20- and 30-somethings that have gained Tomine a cultlike following.”–US News and World Report
“[Tomine’s] latest arc (issues 9-11) follows moody movie-theater owner Ben Tanaka, who struggles to hang on to his Asian girlfriend while secretly lusting after white ladies. He’s sad and somewhat despicable, and yet Tomine, being the understated virtuoso he is, effortlessly spins him into a Gen-X hero.”–Entertainment Weekly
ABOUT OPTIC NERVE #11:
In this long-awaited conclusion to Adrian Tomine’s three-part epic, the story leaps across the country, taking place entirely in New York. All of protagonist Ben Tanaka’s worst (and most amusing) traits are brought to the fore as his obsessive quest reaches a fever pitch. His best friend, Alice Kim, finds herself at an unexpected crossroads in her life, forcing her to make several life-altering decisions. But whatever happened to Ben’s girlfriend, Miko Hayashi? That and many other answers are revealed as our protagonists walk and talk their way through the streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan, all delineated in Tomine’s evocatively pristine style. Optic Nerve issues #9 to 11 are being collected into Tomine’s first long-form graphic novel, Shortcomings, due out in Fall 2007.
