Conrad Vernon, who co-directed The Sausage Party, will helm MGM’s animated revival of the popular horror-comedy franchise The Addams Family.

Vernon is an animation veteran in Hollywood having also co-directed features such as Shrek 2, Monsters vs Aliens and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. Sausage Party, which he co-directed with Greg Tiernan and starred the likes of Seth Rogen and Salma Hayek, ended up being a raunchy adult-themed surprise hit that grossed over $140 million worldwide.

A revival of this property, which was to be co-written and co-produced by Tim Burton, had long been eyed by MGM but it never materialized. Vernon will now be charged with bringing Charles Addams' vision to life, revolving around the creepy Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Wednesday, Pugsley, Lurch and Grandmama. Their kooky stories originated in a series of 150 single-panel cartoons by Addams that appeared in The New Yorker between 1938 and the cartoonist’s death in 1988.

The family then made the move to television with the beloved 1964-66 ABC comedy starring John Astin and Carolyn Jones. This was followed by an equally short-lived animated series (which got its own Gold Key comic tie-in), a reunion special and a couple of revivals (both animated and live-action, and both brief). With a more contemporary and fresh take being lined up, Vernon will also be producing alongside Gail Berman, via her shingle The Jackal Group, and Alex Schwartz.
