The upcoming animated film, helmed by Sausage Party directors Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan, will provide an updated origin story for the family while pitting them against reality show host Margaux Needler as they prepare for an extended family celebration.

"I drew from the brilliantly original Charles Addams New Yorker cartoons for the look of the film and decided to tell the story of how Gomez and Morticia meet, find their house and start their family," Vernon explained in a press release from MGM. "This unique approach is what drew me in to direct the film. The reimagining also extends to the stellar cast we’ve put together who will each bring their own spin to our film that will appeal to longtime fans of the Addams and introduce them to a new generation."

The Addams Family originally debuted as a cartoon strip by Charles Addams, running in the pages of The New Yorker starting in 1938. The strip was adapted for television by ABC in 1964, leading to two separate animated series, two popular live action films in the early 1990s, an attempted live action television reboot in 1998 and a Broadway stage musical.

Directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan from a script written by Matt Lieberman, The Addams Family is an animated update of the popular franchise. The film stars Oscar Isaac as Gomez, Charlize Theron as Morticia, Bette Midler as Grandmama, Chloë Grace Moretz as Wednesday, Finn Wolfhard as Pugsley, Nick Kroll as Uncle Fester and Allison Janney as Addams family antagonist Margaux Needler. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on October 11, 2019.
