Adam Sandler discussed his openness to the idea of a Waterboy sequel.

Sandler appeared on Variety's Awards Circuit Podcast to promote his 2022 sports film Hustle. In the podcast, the 56-year-old addressed the possibility of returning to host another episode of Saturday Night Live and his eagerness to star in a future sequel for the 1998 film The Waterboy. "That would be fun as hell," Sandler said. "I love Mama. I love Henry Winkler. I mean, come on. He's always gonna be Coach Klein to me." The Mama Sandler refers to is Kathy Bates' character, Helen "Mama" Boucher.

Despite Sandler's excitement to jump on board, the Happy Gilmore actor is unsure what a potential sequel could entail. "But, I don't know man, it's funny. I don't know what the ideas [would be]," Sandler said. Additionally, Sandler pitched an idea for a follow-up film to Happy Gilmore. "Wouldn't that be fun to do the senior tour of Happy Gilmore, and hang out with all those guys and try to write a great script about Happy as an older guy, and having to calm down his temper and all that stuff? But, I never know. Maybe one day, something like that."

In March 2021, All Elite Wrestling filed a trademark for The Waterboy's Captain Insano character, played by professional wrestler Paul Wight, after the company signed Wight to a long-term deal. The trademark registration covers various media like video games, DVDs and CDs. In Wight's one scene, Bobby calls the professional wrestler to ask if he needs a personal water boy, but Captain Insano bursts into laughter after mistaking Bobby for a young boy.

Mama Shows Her Support for 'Bobby Boucher'

Following the announcement of the 2020 Oscar nominations, Bates took to Twitter to express her disappointment in Sandler's absence from the nominee list for his performance in the Safdi Brother's Uncut Gems. The Titanic star replied to Sandler's initial tweet, congratulating her for her Best Supporting Actress nomination for Clint Eastwood's Richard Jewell. "I love you my Bobby Boucher!!! You was robbed!! But Mama loves you!!! I learned a new urban slang word for you! You da GOAT!! Not the one we eat at home, Son," Bates wrote.

The Waterboy follows a 31-year-old named Bobby Boucher, who serves as a water boy for the University of Louisiana's football team. The Mud Dogs sport a losing streak of 40 games, but their coach tries to convince Bobby's mom to let him join the team after witnessing his potential to turn their record around. At the end of the film, Bobby helps the Mud Dogs win the Bourbon Bowl, and they name him the game's Most Valuable Player.

The Waterboy is available to stream for free on Tubi.
