Official Press Release
"Crisis at the Comic Bug," a charity signing featuring writers Geoff Johns and Marv Wolfman and inker Norm Rapmund, raised $2,177 for ACTOR, A Commitment To Our Roots this past Saturday, March 25. Fans were lined up down the block, and some came from over 100 miles away for a chance to meet the creators behind DC's legendary titles Crisis on Infinite Earths and its sequel Infinite Crisis. And in an amazing display of generosity, the Comic Bug donated 100% of the day's sales to ACTOR.
This is the third such fundraiser the Manhattan Beach, CA shop has thrown since it first opened its doors in June 2004, raising a grand total of $6,399 for various charities.
Donating 100% of the day's profits is unheard of for most sensible businesses. However, store manager Mike Wellman says there is a method behind the madness. "We feel very fortunate that we're able to make a comfortable living doing what we love. If we can put together an event that's fun for the fans as well as good for the comic community, that gives us a much better feeling than just throwing that money in the coffers!"
Infinite Crisis inker Norm Rapmund was hesitant at first about appearing alongside Wolfman and Johns, but was convinced by The Comic Bug staff who insisted that the signing needed an artist, comics being a visual medium. "Signing with superstar writers Geoff and Marv was a blast!" Norm exclaimed, "You guys know how to make a guy feel special. If you ever have another fundraiser, give me a call. I'm always glad to help out."
"People occasionally complain about the comics business," stated ACTOR president Jim McLauchlin, "but it never ceases to amaze me what can be done with a little proactive thinking and hard work. The Comic Bug was thronged with fans all day long, and they did HUGE business for the day, both from existing customers and new friends. It just goes to show that opportunity is what you make of it, and we at ACTOR are very thankful for this opportunity."
The Comic Bug regularly hosts events and signings at its Manhattan Beach location. This Wednesday, March 29, the shop has scheduled the creators behind the indy buzz-book Living In Infamy.
"We're all in this industry together," said store owner Jun Goeku. "Retailers rely on the creators to manufacture a good product and they rely on us to get it out to the readers. It's in all of our best interest to scratch each other's backs."
