Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse producers and writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller revealed some details about the treatment they wrote for a movie about The Flash.

In the most recent newsletter from The Hollywood Reporter, Lord and Miller revealed that they were hired to write a treatment for a Flash movie in 2015. The duo even met with Zack Snyder, who was planning the future of the DC Extended Universe at the time. While they have not yet seen DC Studios' The Flash, they revealed that the movie looks different from what they had come up with. "It did involve time travel, but it was not a multiversal story. So I think it is safe to say that this is its own unique thing," Miller said. "There are definitely some things that were in the trailers that I've seen that were similar to things that are in our treatment, but I'm certain that, from what I know now of the story, it seems quite different from what we had."

After their departure from The Flash project, Lord and Miller, the creative minds behind films such as 21 Jump Street and The LEGO Movie, ended up working on 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which became recognized as one of the best-animated films of all time. Since then, they have spent five years working on Across the Spider-Verse, which continues the story of Miles Morales and Gwen Stacey as they discover more about the multiverse. Since its release on June 2, Across the Spider-Verse has been praised by fans and critics. During its first weekend in theaters, Across the Spider-Verse quadrupled the opening weekend earnings of Into the Spider-Verse.

Despite coming from different studios, Across the Spider-Verse and The Flash share a distinct similarity in that their respective plots revolve around the multiverse. Across the Spider-Verse producer Peter Ramsey said recently spoke about Hollywood's current obsession with the multiverse, saying, "[The multiverse is] an idea that's been around, so it was bound to happen sooner or later." Ramsey also teased the third film in the Spider-Verse series and its continuation of the multiversal story. "Hopefully [the franchise’s third film] Beyond the Spider-Verse will tell us something," he added.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now playing in theaters. The Flash hits theaters on June 16, 2023.
