A Mother's Day-themed Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse promo spotlights the movie's pregnant web-slinger, Spider-Woman/Jessica Drew (Issa Rae).The clip of Jessica was posted to the movie's official Twitter account with the caption, "Super moms doing superhero things. Happy Mother's Day!" The original Spider-Woman can be seen battling a Renaissance-themed Vulture (Jorma Taccone) alongside Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) and the first movie's Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld). After landing a blow using her motorcycle, Jessica is stopped by Gwen, who asks if she's fighting evil while pregnant. "Oh, this?" Jessica responds, "We don't know the sex yet, my husband wants it to be surprise. He's really corny, but so hot." Spider-Man 2099 then reminds them that they're still in battle while he wrestles the Vulture.
Jessica Drew is one of many new spider-people who will appear in the upcoming sequel to the hit 2018 film Spider-Man: into the Spider-Verse. In the movie, she's an established member of the Spider-Society, a council of spider-people from different dimensions who deal with threats to the multiverse. This version of the character is heavily inspired by the Spider-Woman comic series by Dennis Hopeless and Javier Rodriguez, in which Drew similarly wore a biker suit and juggled superhero life with her pregnancy.
Spider-Parents Take the Stage in Across the Spider-Verse
Writer and producer Phil Lord said in an earlier interview that lots of effort went into this Spider-Woman's design. In particular, the character was built around voice actor Issa Rae, who's perhaps best known for her HBO show Insecure. "A lot of work has gone into making that character look great," Lord said. "If you've ever been around Issa, she's such a dynamo of talent and grace, so you just want to make the character look as cool as she is."
The character won't be the movie's only prominent web-slinger with kids to worry about, as an official trailer revealed that the first film's Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) and his universe's Mary Jane Watson now have a child together. The baby, nicknamed "Mayday" Parker, can be seen riding along with Peter in the trailer. In the comics, Mayday eventually grows up to be a major crimefighter in her own right, and an alternate adult version of Mayday can be seen in some crowd shots in Across the Spider-Verse trailers and posters.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse hits theaters on June 2.
