The sci-fi thriller "God Particle" has been in the works at J.J. Abrams' "Bad Robot" since 2012, but it looks like things are moving forward in a big way. David Oyelowo and Gugu Mbatha-Raw are both in talks to star in the film, as reported Tuesday by Variety. Paramount declined comment on Variety's report.

No details are yet publicly available on the characters Oyelowo and Mbatha-Raw have been tapped to play, but the film is described as centering on "a team of astronauts who make a terrifying discovery that challenges all they know about the fabric of reality, as they desperately fight for their survival." Julius Onah will direct, with Abrams producing.

Oyelowo is best known for starring as Martin Luther King, Jr. in 2014's "Selma," and has also appeared in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and "Jack Reacher." Mbatha-Raw guested as Tish Jones in four episodes of "Doctor Who," and has been rumored for a role in "Star Wars: Episode VIII."

"God Particle" is scheduled for release on Feb. 24, 2017.
