Warning: The following contains spoilers for Gamma Flight #2, on sale now from Marvel.

As evidenced in the current Immortal Hulk run, Bruce Banner has many dangerous enemies. No matter where he goes, the Green Goliath almost always finds a fight. However, in Al Ewing, Crystal Frasier, Lan Medina, Antonio Fabela and VC's Joe Sabino Gamma Flight #2, one of the Hulk's biggest foes (and MCU threat) just made a comeback: the Abomination.

Emil Blonsky, the original Abomination, doesn't appear until the final pages of Gamma Flight #2, but when he does, it's a big deal. The Abomination is in an undisclosed laboratory, giving orders to a doctor. It appears that Blonsky is in charge of this whole operation, which has been a big opponent of Gamma Flight.

This laboratory was responsible for giving Skaar, Son of the Hulk his gamma mutation back, as well as experimenting on other gamma mutates, such as Stockpile. Abomination also lets Skaar "put on a show," by destroying the Hulkbusters.

From his dialogue, it seems that Abomination wants people to see how outdated the Hulkbusters are, creating new gamma monsters to fight the older versions. It also seems that Abomination has cut into his own flesh, providing his gamma samples for the laboratory's future experiments.

The Abomination was last seen in 2014's Hulk #4, by Mark Waid, Mark Bagley, Andrew Hennessy, Jason Keith and VC's Cory Petit. At the time, Blonsky was little more than a reanimated corpse, tracking down the Hulk. After engaging in a battle with both the Hulk and the Avengers, the Abomination was teleported off-planet, floating in the vicinity of Jupiter. It will be interesting to see how Abomination got back to Earth, and how he regained his intelligence.

Outside of this last appearance, several others have taken the Abomination's name in the past few years. In 2019's Immortal Hulk #18, by Ewing, Joe Bennett, Ruy Jose, Paul Mounts and VC's Cory Petit, Shadow Base used samples of the original Abomination on Rick Jones. Rick "evolved" into a new Abomination, and was forced to fight the Hulk.

After Rick was freed from this cocoon, General Fortean of Shadow Base became the next Abomination in 2019's Immortal Hulk #21, by Ewing, Ryan Bodenheim, Paul Mounts and Petit. Now, however, it seems that the original Abomination is back, just in time for his pending return to the MCU.

Abomination Talking About Skaar Destroying Hulkbusters in Gamma Flight #2

The Abomination is currently scheduled to appear in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming She-Hulk series. With these upcoming projects in the works, now is a great time for Blonsky to re-enter Marvel's comic book universe. Moreover, Blonsky's return is just in time for the conclusion of Immortal Hulk in October. Given the strange experiments that Abomination is conducting on gamma mutates, it's possible that his actions could tie-in to the final issues of Immortal Hulk.

There is a lot to fit into the ending of Immortal Hulk, but it's quite possible that the Abomination could appear, tying into enemies such as the Leader and the One-Below-All. Considering the violent history between Hulk and Abomination, it would be a shame if these two arch-rivals missed each other before the end of Immortal Hulk.

Even if Abomination doesn't play a role in Immortal Hulk's conclusion, he is already playing a part in the beginning of Gamma Flight. The entire purpose of the gamma-irradiated team thus far has been to look out for other gamma mutates and protect them.

Abomination, on the other hand, is exploiting the victims of gamma radiation and using them to hunt down their own kind. With these opposing ideas in mind, it seems that the Abomination and his forces will be major antagonists for Gamma Flight going forward.
