It's a good day for Marvel TV: ABC has renewed "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." for a second season, and given a series order to "Marvel's Agent Carter," as announced on Marvel.com. The second season of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is said to start in fall 2014, though no time frame was given for an "Agent Carter" debut.

"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." was considered a safe bet for renewal by industry tracking site TV By the Numbers, who earlier this week gave it a 100 percent chance of returning for season two.

An "Agent Carter" series was first reported as a possibility back in September, depicting the further adventures of Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) in an early version of S.H.I.E.L.D. post-World War II. The character first appeared in live-action in 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger," and Atwell reprised the role in an "Agent Carter" "Marvel One-Shot" short film bundled with last fall's "Iron Man 3" home release.

Deadline has a series description for "Agent Carter": "It's 1946, and peace has dealt Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark, all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life -- Steve Rogers." "Agent Carter" will be executive produced by "Reaper" creators Michele Fazekas & Tara Butters, "Captain America" screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and head of Marvel TV Jeph Loeb.

This announcement comes the same day as the news that DC Comics-based TV series "The Flash," "iZombie" and "Constantine" have all received series orders (the first two at The CW, "Constantine" at NBC). Between those three, "Gotham" (which received a series order earlier this week), "Arrow" (renewed for its third season back in February) and Marvel's two shows, there are a total of seven series based on Marvel or DC properties on the 2014-2015 network TV docket.

The first "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." season finale, "Beginning of the End," airs Tuesday at 8 p.m. on ABC.
