Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here's the archive of the moments posted so far!
Today we take a look at Rich Remender and Eric Nguyen's Strange Girl....Enjoy!
The high concept behind Strange Girl is basically "What if the Rapture actually DID happen?"
Only, of course, not in the same way that the Left Behind series depicts the Rapture. Remender takes a much more off-kilter look at the Rapture, and he has the book star a young woman named Bethany, whose pious family went to Heaven in the Rapture, so now it's ten years later and she's been apprenticing with a demon for years - so she knows a lot of magic.
Now she has decided to make a run for the rumored last "Gate to Heaven" in a world that is now overrun with demons.
Despite the usage of the Rapture, the book is really not all that religious.
The "break-out" character from the book is Bethany's "guardian demon," Bloato.
Here is a sample from early in the series featuring Bethany and Bloato, drawn quite nicely by Nguyen...
As good as Nguyen is here, he's even better when the action gets frenetic - as it does often.
Nguyen had to leave the series in the middle of the run to do some work for DC Comics, but he returned to finish out the book's 18-issue run. Nick Stakal filled in admirably.
As is Remender's wont, the book took a LOT of twists and turns from the beginning of the series until the end. Just when you think he's going one way, he'll zig the other way, but in the middle of that zig, he'll suddenly zag the OTHER way. He sure makes his titles a rollercoaster ride where you never know what'll happen next!
Strange Girl, though, is a good ride.
The series was collected into four trade paperbacks, and recently Image released a hardcover slipcase edition of all four TPBs. You can get the collection for about $36 right now on Amazon! That's a fine price!
