Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here's the archive of the comics posted so far!

Today we take a look at Peter Milligan and Edvin Biukovic's classic Human Target mini-series from 1999....

Enjoy!

The story in this series was strong, and Milligan basically riffed on the ideas he presents in this mini-series for a long time in his future Human Target stories (which were also very good), but as good as the story was, I think the thing most people would take away from this mini-series was how talented Edvin Biukovic was, and it is a real tragedy that it has been over a decade since he passed away.

As you may or may not know, the basic concept of Human Target (who was created by Len Wein and Carmine Infantino, by the way) is that Christopher Chance disguises himself as people who are targets of assassination, kidnapping, etc. and when the bad guys come for their target, Chance is waiting there to take them down. It's a very strong high concept.

Well, as the mini-series begins, it appears as though Milligan is playing it relatively straight, just executed very well (with brilliant action-packed storytelling by Biukovic)...

Wasn't that just amazing?

But then the twist shows up when a mysterious masked client Chance turned down earlier in the comic shows up again to save Chance's life from a female assassin...

Come on, how could you not want to read the rest of this mini-series after that?!

The whole series was collected into a trade paperback, but just this year, it was collected into a second trade (along with the follow-up graphic novel, by Milligan and and the brilliant Javier Pulido) called Chance Meetings. So go buy that!
