Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here's the archive of the comics posted so far!
We continue the Cool Christmas Comic Countdown with a Christmas comic that is also a sequel to the film, Clerks, by the writer/director of Clerks, Kevin Smith and artist Jim Mahfood...
Now, do note that Clerks is very much an R-Rated film, and thus, so is this Clerks Christmas Special. So bearing that in mind, let's take a look!
This little snippet from this Oni Press comic gives you a good idea of the three major plots of the comic, which are
1. What is the deal with the store in between the Quik Stop and the Video Store? Is that really Santa Claus and did Randall just screw himself by pissing Santa off?
2. The bet Dante and Randall made when they were kids
3. How Dante will handle Caitlin in the asylum
As you can see, the humor in this comic can be quite crude, but it's a well-crafted story and the humor comes from enough character-heavy stuff that I don't mind the gross stuff. To wit, there's a scene later on in the issue that involves a candy cane that is, on the face of it, SO grossly absurd, but the real joke is how Smith takes a character like Dante and has Randall's idiocy rub off on him so much that slowly but surely something that Dante has to know is awful and offensive actually sounds like a good idea. In other words, it is not gross stuff for the sake of gross stuff - it is developed to the point of absurdity and THEN the gross stuff happens. It's a notable difference.
Meanwhile, what can you say about Jim Mahfood?!!? The guy's amazing - SUCH a brilliant storyteller. He helps so much to pack so much information into this comic. This is a really dense read, but an enjoyable one, as well.
