Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the comics posted so far!
Today, for Day 333, let’s take a look at Legionnaires 3 by Keith Giffen, Mindy Newell, Ernie Colon and Karl Kesel!
Legionnaire fans out there could correct me if I’m wrong (wait, did I say COULD – I should have said “undoubtedly will”), but I believe Legionnaires 3 was the first Legion series with a plot by Keith Giffen alone, so in a lot of ways, it was a good precursor to his strong “Five Years Later” run.
The series opens with a really ominous, foreboding introduction to the Time Trapper…
The Time Trapper targets the child of former Legionnaires Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl, and when they think they’ve defeated the would-be kidnappers…
Wow, what a cool cliffhanger, huh?
So the next couple of issues involve the three Legionnaires trying to get to the Time Trapper’s headquarters without letting their fellow Legionnaires finding out what’s going on.
But then they learn that the baby WASN’T the target – it was Lightning Lad himself! The Time Trapper decided that he was the weak link on the team and he could break him and learn the secrets of the Legion. The final issue is all about the Trapper trying to break him, including this scary sequence…
Mindy Newell scripted Giffen’s plot well, and while Giffen is listed as a “designer,” it appears as though he did very loose breakdowns. Colon and Kesel, though, did a fine job off of those breakdowns.
Good series and a nice hint of the coolness of Giffen plots to come!!
