Today we look at a nifty one-off Superman story by Geoff Johns, Brett Anderson and Ray Snyder...

By the by, this would be a neat Superman ongoing team. Anyhow, they contributed a fill-in issue back in 2002 for Superman #185.

It tells the tale of a Little League baseball game in Ohio that is suddenly interrupted by what appears to be a meteor...

Isn't that a ridiculously charming sequence there? I love the way Johns presents the individual personalities of these boys that we have never met and just perfects each one of them. And hey, if you're looking for an artist to capture facial expressions, you'll likely not find a finer one out there than Brett Anderson (something both Kurt Busiek and J. Michael Straczynski know quite well).

Once Superman recovers, he has a solidly entertaining fight with the villain who threw him there, Major Force...

That's not the key to the issue, though. It remains the interaction between Superman and the people of this small Ohio town.

Really cool stuff - and the issue ends with a beautiful two-page sequence by Johns and Anderson leading to a striking final page by Anderson. It's like a Norman Rockwell painting come to comic book life!

Go find this issue! Reader Mark Cook points out that it was reprinted in DC Comics Presents Superman #1, which just recently came out! So your local shop should have it!
