Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the comics posted so far!
Today we look at Greg Rucka, Rich Burchett and Terry Beatty’s Huntress: Cry for Blood mini-series…
The basic plot of Huntress: Cry for Blood is that someone is killing members of the mafia in Gotham and they’re doing it in a way that makes it look like Huntress did it.
This set-up leads to a re-examination of her origins throughout the book, and wow, Rucka is amazing with how well he re-creates the world of Helena Bertinelli. Just look at the power of these next few pages…
Of course, I should note the beautiful work Burchett and Beatty do…holy cow is that some compelling storytelling!!!
Once she is framed for more murders, she goes on the run with Vic Sage, the Question, who has decided to make Huntress a personal project. She trains with him and the two get close.
As they travel together, she tells more of her story…
including how Batman inspired her…
I love how Vic points out how important Batman is to her…
Anyhow, Huntress must eventually return to Gotham to clear her name and confront who is framing her, even if it means confronting some hidden truths about her past (which makes all of the flashbacks vital to the story), including just why WAS it that when everyone else in her family was killed, she was spared. It’s a good little mystery and the usage of Batman, Nightwing and Robin as supporting characters is extremely well placed.
This was a beautiful mini-series. I was really quite surprised when DC did a Huntress Year One mini-series a little while back, since that’s basically what Rucka did here, and he did it SOOOO well that he made it pretty much impossible to out-do, let alone match what he came up with.
We all know how good of a writer Rucka is, but Burchett and Beatty don’t get nearly as much attention – Burchett is such a skilled storyteller…I wish we would see more work from him in mainstream comics. At least Rucka seems to know how great Burchett is, as I believe they have a new project coming out…well…I dunno when, but it is in the works!
