Today we look at Andi Watson's Love Fights (specifically the first volume)...

Andi Watson is a wonderful comic book artist and a great comic book writer, and he's mostly known for writing and drawing comics that don't involve superheroes. So when he did a series about a world filled with superheroes, you knew he was going to give his own unique spin on things, and boy did he ever!

Check out the "meet cute" between the two romantic leads of the series...

So, as you can tell, what we have here is a story of a "normal" guy and a "normal" girl falling in love in the midst of a world of superheroes. However, things are more complicated than that (of course). Jack, you see, is the artist for a comic book about a superhero (which is a promotional deal) while Nora works for a superhero tabloid magazine where she's trying to get her big break by getting the lowdown on a supposed illegitimate child of the superhero Jack's comic is based on.

Watson has already shown himself to have a keen eye for the role of media in society (in his earlier work, Slow News Day) and pretty much ALL of his work shows that he is good at writing relationship drama (while keeping things light enough that it's still FUN to read), so the conflicts between this couple who seem destined to be together are believable enough that it's not just aggravating to see this near-perfect couple keep having walls put up between them.

Meanwhile, perhaps the best character in the comic is Jack's cat, who gets superpowers and the ability to talk - think Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch only even more of a wise ass. Hilarious!!

This was a great, fun series that is well worth looking into. There are two trades out there by Oni Press, although I believe the first one is out of print (you should be able to find it easily enough out there, though). The individual issues are also not too hard to find.
