A Year of Cool Comics – Day 264

Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the comics posted so far!

Today we look at Justice League Quarterly #5, the first issue of Mark Waid’s run on the title, with Mike McKone and Andrew Pepoy on art!

This issue marked the beginning of an extended (chronologically, at least, as this WAS a quarterly title) run by Mark Waid on Justice League Quarterly. He really did quite a good job (this was one of his earliest regular writing assignments at DC).

In this issue, some of the world’s most powerful heroes are having their powers sapped (note the clever way Waid goes about pointing out that Rebis was one of the heroes)…

The issue also deals with Ice having a major conflict with her role on the team…

Beautifully handled scene by Waid (and check out how well McKone has been doing on the issue, as well – some really strong storytelling by both guys).

Okay, so the power-sapping robots of Professor Ivo get Power Girl’s powers and Guy Gardner is knocked unconscious…

The JLI track Tora to Ivo’s hideout, which is a small town made up of robots built by Ivo to be his friends and neighbors…

The robots attack, but we learn that Ivo is not building these robots to attack OTHERS, but to end HIS OWN immortal misery!!

How hilarious is the callback to Guy’s battery having “offensive capabilities” and the bit with Beetle? Great stuff.

So anyways, I won’t spoil the ending for you, but it is charming. Really worth picking this issue up on the back issue market! The back-up stories are good, too.
