A Year of Cool Comics – Day 255

Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the comics posted so far!

Today we take a look at the interesting mini-series The Last Avengers Story by Peter David and Ariel Olivetti…

Enjoy!

The series opens with the idea of the “Last Avengers Story” being written, so Kang steals it from the future to get the story of how he finally wins. He then teams up with Ultron to challenge the Avengers (specifically Hank Pym) to one last battle (before first killing all the current Avengers, who are just wannabes).

We see Hank and the Wasp round up the crew, as they meet the children of various Avengers…

David has a very strong sequence of pages in the middle of the story as the heroes put their team together…

That was some sparkling dialogue with Spider-Man and his son and Johnny Storm and his family.

We get a good moment between Ultron and Pym the night before the big fight.

And here, I’ll give you a snippet of the actual fight…

I prefer Olivetti’s style here to his current, slightly more polished approach.

This was a very underrated little tale – it came at a weird time for the Avengers titles. Nowadays this would get a lot more attention. Still, it’s a strong tale filled with moody, evocative artwork and a powerful script by David.
