Today we take a look at a storyline from the Greatest Roger Stern Stories Ever Told list where the Avengers get into the middle of a conflict between Kang...s?

Avengers #267-269, written by Roger Stern and drawn by John Buscema and Tom Palmer, show a conflict between a society of Kangs, who have sprung up as a result of Mark Gruenwald's theory on Marvel time-travel, that every time you travel in time, you create an alternate reality. So now there are a bunch of alternate reality Kangs running around.

Stern introduces us to this idea in a brilliant opening in Avengers #267, drawn amazingly by Buscema and Palmer...

The Avengers are split into two groups, as half the team is abducted into limbo (the land beyond time), where they face off against other creatures who had been sent to limbo - the Dire Wraiths!!

Meanwhile, the three teammates left home have to make the impossible seem, well, possible, as they figure out a way to access limbo themselves...

I love the mix of dramatic plot development along with the subplot stuff (people protesting Namor becoming an Avenger) and the character moments. Stern really did a nice job developing the personalities of the characters he was given steward of, especially his own creation, Captain Marvel. He assimilated her into the title very well.

The finale of the arc involves even more twists and turns (time travel will do that to you), but it all together it was a smart, complex tale that allowed for some good action sequences and an intriguing new premise for Kang.
